It is very difficult to breed the perfect American Curl ear, but the loving personality is the same in every kitten.

The American Curl cat may have short, medium or long hair in all colors. The undercoat must not be thick and fluffy (eg. like the Persian). These felines are easy to groom, healthy, friendly and not neurotic.

The American Curl is a new breed with strong "survival" genes therefore the American Curl kittens are strong and a pleasure to raise. It is up to the humans to select healthy unrelated cats as breeders to keep this breed strong.

Breeding for perfect American Curl ears and show quality cats is very difficult. Exactly how the curl ear is inherited is not clear. Supreme American Curl parents may give pet quality kittens and a cat with a curl ear with faults may give supreme kittens.

Choose a healthy sire and dam typical of the American Curl breed and take the breeding for good ears from there. In these felines, if your sire gives a high percentage American Curl ear faults with more than one female, then you will have to breed with another male even if your sire happen to have a supreme pedigree.

Resist the temptation to breed American Curl kittens from one sire or dam only, as a negative trait might not show up in the first generation kittens and by the time the defect is obvious in the cats, the fault may be wide spread.
It will take time and dedication to find the right type of curl ear that will breed the good American Curl ear, and then to set those genes into healthy lines.This is a relative new breed, options to breed out to unregistered cats are still open in most countries. Breed out to the domestic cat where the survival of the fittest is still the rule.

American Curl ear faults are :-
It is a fault if the curl is obviously not the same on both ears. In young kittens the curls of the ears will often differ. They will change, curling and uncurling until the ears start to set at age about 4 months to a year. Like with any part of the body a slight difference between the two sides are normal.
Folds also referred to as pleats are a definite fault. The ear can make a pleat horizontal or fold vertical.
A narrow base or a small ear is also a fault. It is difficult to decide where the line by too small or too narrow is, but that is not so important as usually the rest of the ear have other faults as well. A small ear may have a good curl, but I have not seen a good curl in a narrow ear.
	Normal ears are not a fault. The curl ear gene is absent. The kitten is perfectly normal.	This ear fault is due to a vertical pleat. Ears are narrow and nearly straight.
Large ears (like in the Siamese) do not give good ears as they tend to make a vertical fold or crimp in the first generation but it may breed out smooth in the next generation and then it ads size to the ear. Large straight ear x large faulty ear is somewhat of a chaos. Size is one of the most difficult factors to breed into the ear.
An ear with a broad base is not a fault (in my opinion). These ears will tend to curl only slightly, but if the curl is smooth then this is the ear to use for breeding.
There is only one way to find the perfect American curl ear and that is to breed different cats until you find the right combination.
